TRAVEL: Koh Lanta, Thailand – Scenes from the Island

008

In planning our trip, what island we wanted to go to was by far the most difficult decision.  For every person that raved about an island, another person hated on it.  After a lot of back and forth, we finally settled on Koh Lanta, a group of islands on the western side of Thailand.  It’s got a very relaxed vibe – you’re not going to find the crazy nightlife of Koh Phangan here – and a lot of the island still feels untouched and wild.  It truly is a beautiful island.

After a few days of non-stop action in Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta was just what we needed.  It took a late-night flight + a quick overnight in Phuket + an early morning ferry, but we finally made it.  We immediately got down to business: sun – check, books – check, drinks – check check.  Some days we found ourselves sticking close to the hotel enjoying the private beach, other days we would hail a tuk tuk and explore the island.

In walking along the beach you’ll see this everywhere.  Any guesses as to what makes them?  I developed a slightly irrational fear of them – keeping my eyes firmly planted on the ground, and diverting my path to avoid them as much as possible.  I’d like to say it was because I was trying to avoid accidentally stepping on one and prematurely ending its life, but really it was because I was terrified that one would accidentally run over my foot.  I know they look kind of cute, but guys, they run sideways and they seem to always be in fighter position with claws raised.

The things you’ll see when you driving around –

Holly: Darn, I wish I had my phone out to take a picture – now it’s too far away

Jared: Nah, I got it

Holly: (looks at photo) Oh my god, that tuk tuk has a face

Jared: Of course, what were you talking about?

Holly: The chick inside was holding a monkey

Despite what you may have been told, monkeys just want to be your friend.  So friendly that instead of hanging back and giving you the eye, they’ll come right up to you and steal a peanut or two or, you know, the whole bag.

My favorite part of every day though was finding a spot on the beach, getting some drinks, and watching the sun set.

  1. Monkeys are cute but basically disgusting. Looks like some place south of Puerto Vallarta we went to in 1970, beautiful but underdeveloped–just right.
    What is that blue drink?

  2. Totes awesome, obvi. I still want a pet monkey. Were you able to bring one back to Belgium with you?

That place looks beautiful, reminded me of the DR (Dominican Republic).
